Jaan Tootsen “Portraits”

Armed with cameras, microphones, and an excellent memory, Jaan Tootsen documents the world he lives in. Jaan once told me that the best thing is to be the dumbest person in the room. Perhaps this desire is one of the reasons why he has been a student (some would say the rector) at the Radio Night University for a quarter of a century, creating spaces where people can come together and discuss the meaning of life. But Jaan’s main driving force is curiosity; endless curiosity and a love for people. He truly wants to know what and how we think. He observes hippies and the president with the same friendly smirk, and listens to a young punk and an old priest with equal attentiveness. As a documentary filmmaker, he doesn’t limit himself to just listening and watching, but captures all these faces, thoughts, and events from the early 21st century. For himself, for future generations, or simply for the sake of beauty.
