Meet the Artist: About the body with Julia SH [ENG]

From 15 September, Fotografiska will host a special exhibition of FFL – Fotografiska For Life, focusing on people with special needs. The exhibition is a collaboration between Fotografiska and the Ministry of Social Affairs and aims to show that all our lives are sometimes ordinary and sometimes special, regardless of our special needs. The exhibition features the work of three artists, one of whom is the Swedish photographer Julia SH.

Julia SH was born in Stockholm, Sweden, where she spent the first 18 years of her life, before moving to London to pursue her studies in Fine Art. She has always been fascinated with the human form in all its iterations, particularly the female body. This interest has grown since moving to the United States, where nudity, the body, and how we view it are highly controversial issues.

Since 2012 Julia has been building a body of work that features subjects depicted for their intrinsic value opposed to aesthetic appeal. She is passionate about giving a platform to underrepresented body types and subcultures across the spectrum of multiple identity coordinates — gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, age and ability.
Julia’s images often exist between the intersection of sculpture and painting and will often be approached as though created in a non-photographic medium.

At the Artist Talk, Julia will talk about her process, her use of photography as a medium and her own journey as an artist.
