Von Krahl theatre

Founded in 1992 by Peeter Jalakas, Von Krahl Theatre was the first private theatre in re-independent Estonia. During that and the following decade, Von Krahl cultivated a contemporary, postmodern theatrical language, proving to be the most consistent and thorough pioneer on this path. The theatre has always been characterized by a synthesis of different art and media forms, an auteur approach to the material, and an active social stance.

In 1998, a permanent ensemble came together in the legendary venue then located in Tallinn’s Old Town. In collaboration with this group, directors from Estonia and across the globe staged productions spanning vastly different styles, approaches, and acting methods, which found resonance from Helsinki to New York. The core members of the troupe were Tiina Tauraite, Liina Vahtrik, Mari Abel, Juhan Ulfsak, Taavi Eelmaa, and Erki Laur.

In the second decade of this century, the ensemble, artistic leadership, and organizational structure were renewed several times. Since 2024, the theatre has been led by Juhan Ulfsak and Jaak Prints, and once again features a permanent troupe whose members are Liisa Saaremäel, Kristina Preimann, Kristel Zimmer, Edgar Vunš, Karl Birnbaum, Markus Andreas Auling, and Herman Pihlak.
