Illustration exhibition “Sandwiches with Summer and Wind”

Sandwiches with Summer and Wind

The exhibition “Sandwiches with Summer and Wind” examines the position of illustration and the illustrator in the local art field through the decades and focuses on the ability of an image to evoke and store feelings that remain in the memory and have an impact even years after they are experienced.

The exhibition highlights illustration as an independent and powerful art form that entails not only personal experiences but also cultural memory, a critique of contemporary realities and the literacy of ambivalent visual material. On display are works by acclaimed artists whose works can be found in many major collections and who have left a distinct mark on our art history and cultural history with their active exhibition work and diverse oeuvre. Several of them have had a major impact on the development of book art and influenced the visual memory and aesthetic preferences of readers. During a period of suppression by the authorities, these artists not only complemented the text but managed to weave messages critical of the era and politics, and ambivalent symbolism into their illustrations. The images in children’s books created a tentative, utopian, poetic, and psychedelic Umwelt, at times completely separate from everyday power politics. Many illustrations have transformed the cultural and emotional landscape of perception of several generations, as well as their ability to read multi-layered visual messages.
