Dila Demir Woven Stories from Anatolia
Dila Demir – “Woven Stories from Anatolia”
The exhibition *”Woven Stories from Anatolia”* takes visitors on a journey through the stories of a region. Turkish textile artist Dila Demir explores unspoken experiences inspired by her cultural heritage, interwoven with mythological hints and patterns of Anatolian carpets.
Anatolian carpets are composed of countless motifs, many symbolizing fertility, the sun, protection, creativity, and abundance—qualities often attributed to goddesses and women. These motifs go beyond mere decoration, reflecting the cultural, social, and religious dimensions of Anatolian society while also serving as a nonverbal language of abstract emotions and thoughts. To those who understand this language, the carpets reveal the complex stories of their weavers.
“Woven Stories from Anatolia” is a tribute to the timeless legacy of Anatolian carpet weaving. Growing up surrounded by vibrant patterns, Dila draws from traditional designs while weaving contemporary narratives into her carpets. By reinterpreting traditional motifs, she bridges the past and the present, adding a contemporary layer unique to her artistic style.
Dila Demir is an artist and design researcher from Turkey, currently based in Tallinn. She holds master’s and doctoral degrees from the Estonian Academy of Arts, where she works as a researcher. Dila explores embodiment through kinesthetic interactions mediated by textiles, focusing on their potential as a second skin for the body. Through the art of weaving, she brings the rich metaphors embedded in Anatolian heritage into contemporary life. Dila is also part of the artist duo nar.interactive, which develops interactive installations and performances exploring embodiment and cultural heritage.
